The purpose of this policy is to set forth guidelines so that visitorsof
our web site are aware of what data is collected by CMU and how it is used.
This policy applies to websites in the cmu.edu domain, unless a site has
it's own privacy policy which must be listed on that site. However, those
sites cannot adopt a privacy statement that in any way supersedes federal
or state regulations.

Cookies | |
Cookies are small pieces of data stored by the Web browser. Cookies are often used to remember information about preferences and pages you have visited. If the site uses cookies the first time you visit that site a cookie will be placed on your computer. The next time you visit this site, your browser will send back the cookie. None of the publicly avaliable sites un our server use cookies. Only
the sites that require the user to log in will place cookies. The cookies
are used toauthenticate users, so that one you log in, you do not have
to log in at every web page. To disable cookies in Netscape Navigator,
choose Edit and Preferences to manage your cookie settings, in Internet
Explorer select Tools and Internet Options. If you disable cookies you
will not be able to use some of our sites. |

Security and accuracy of confidential information | |
Sites which maintain confidential information, such as records relating to employees or students, are responsible for following privacy-related policies and laws. Data transmitted across the university network or stored on university systems may be accessed by others as a result of misuse by an individual, as an incidental result of the routine operation of the network and systems, or in response to a court subpoena or university investigation into suspected or alleged misuse. While complete privacy of personal data may not be possible, users who wish to ensure a higher degree of privacy for their data are encouraged to use encryption, PGP security, or other techniques to reduce the risk that others may access their data. |
